Engineer, tinkerer, EV enthusiast

Hey, I'm Simon.

I've spent the last several years working on electric commercial vehicles in New Zealand, Australia and Europe. From fleet electrification strategy to hands-on design and engineering through to deployment.

Check out some of these projects at www.ecvs.co.nz.

Recently I picked up a used Gen 1 Nissan Leaf for cheap to do the short commute to work and have been quietly impressed with it. The only thing holding it back is the range issue but despite that they are fantastic cars! Nissan did a great job and my preference over the modern cheap equivelents.

I've been working on a battery upgrade kit, which I think will also be of interest to others. Plus the mind wanders - how to fully utilise the new capacity in a V2X setup for home. See below for what I'm putting together!

Current Projects

Active Prototype stage

Nissan Leaf 52kWh Battery Upgrade

Replacing degraded 24kWh Leaf batteries with 52kWh CALB modules. ~300km real-world range, full CHAdeMO retained.

Idea Feasibility stage

Leaf as a Home Battery

Using the Leaf's CHAdeMO port to push energy back into the house. Solar in during the day, power the home in the evening. No vehicle modifications needed.
